Weighted Reins
Posted by John Brand on
Quality weighted leather split reins are wonderful to use in in day to day life and also the show ring. However, more goes into making weighted leather split reins than one would assume.
As with all leather tack, selecting the right high quality, premium, and dense fibered leather is the first step. Hides have thicker areas, which are used as the weighted ends of the split reins. The reins are cut side by side, and no other materials are added to the ends to make them weighted. The heavier weight makes the ends swing less, and also provide a nice drape and a wonderful feel between you and the horse.
"You should be very particular when choosing a pair of leather horse reins. They are used as the line of communication that passes your signals to your horse. Without a doubt, the reins need to feel good in your hands and good to your horse. They must have life to them so when communicating thru them, your horse has a clear understanding of what you are asking them to do. There is no substitution for quality when choosing the correct set of reins for you and your horse. They are exposed to the elements on a continual basis, so poor quality reins will suffer by losing their life over time and diminish the feel between you and your horse. Whatever phase you are experiencing in your horsemanship journey, good quality American made tack is an essential part in leading you and your horse to the next level.
